The Benevolent Society is now running special retreats for carers of people with disability living in the South East Sydney area.

Organised through our South East Sydney Commonwealth Respite Program, the retreats give carers the chance to take a break and enjoy themselves in a supportive and understanding environment.

During the retreat carers have the opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge with others in a similar situation, while learning new skills and having fun. The retreats are run over three days, allowing participants time to relax, get to know each other and form new friendships.

Skilled professionals present educational workshops on self-care and stress management, as well as providing valuable information on topics important to many carers, such as legal issues and future planning.

Carers have plenty of time to relax in peace and privacy, and are invited, if they wish, to take part in fun recreational activities such as Sun Rise walks, swimming, Drumming Tai Chi, Yoga, and seated massage.

Brian took part in one of our carers’ retreats in Terrigal, and found it extremely beneficial. He told us:

“I never knew things like these existed, it made me feel like there are more people like me out there.”

Our carer retreats are offered free of charge and include twin accommodation, all meals and transport. While the carers are away we organise respite for their loved ones, so all they need to do is to relax and enjoy a well-deserved break!

Helen, who was also at the Terrigal retreat, enjoyed it immensely, saying:

“I have never had this much fun in one day in years.”
