Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Reconciliation Vision

Benevolent's vision for reconciliation is of a strong and inclusive Australian society based on equality, that advances the economic, political and social inclusion of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve parity in life outcomes.

More than words

Our commitment to reconciliation is a key part of social change. Reconciliation is a journey of healing, essential for Australia to mature as a nation.

We believe by working together, we’re stronger, and we can achieve more than working alone.  We focus on building respectful relationships and opportunities by meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, families and communities, other not-for-profit organisations, Reconciliation Australia and our staff.

Key to our approach is translating good intentions to practical actions to make real change for the people who work with us, and communities we support.

Reconciliation Action Plan

Our Innovate RAP 2023 - 2025 highlights our achievements and current priorities. We have three pillars focused on: Respect, Relationships; and Opportunities. These pillars are outlined in the document with key focus areas and actions for our people and organisation.

Our RAP reinforces our commitment to reconciliation. It maps our path to support reconciliation through building relationships, respect and opportunities.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy is a direct deliverable of the organisation’s Reconciliation commitments detailed in its Innovate RAP (2023-2025).

This strategy delivers a framework of accountability in working to deliver an impactful and equitable employee experience for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at Benevolent through activities focused on recruitment, retention, career development, and workplace culture.

The intention of Benevolent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy is to build a high performing and sustainable cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in the areas of policy, programs, professional staff and senior leadership through a multi-faceted and coordinated approach. To achieve this Benevolent will, invest in resources and strategies to attract, retain, support and develop Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent. This will be fortified by a workplace culture, which understands, values and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnership Strategy

Delivering on Benevolent's values of integrity, respect, collaboration, effectiveness and optimism. Benevolent will work towards relationships that will deliver genuine partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples communities to ensure that as an organisation we are culturally safe and responsive, reflect community and family strengths, local needs and aspirations, leadership and cultural knowledge.

In working towards this goal, we have developed meaningful formal and informal relationships with a wide range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples community-controlled organisations (ATSICCOs) across Australia.

Our partnership approach focuses on harnessing each organisation’s unique strengths to deliver strong outcomes for clients, their families and communities, and providing Two Way Benefits to our partners and Benevolent.

Cultural Capability Framework

Benevolent is on a journey towards ensuring our staff are culturally capable, as part of our commitment to reconciliation described in our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
Prior to the launch of the Cultural Capability Framework, Benevolent undertook a series of introductory workshops to acknowledge the discussion and consultation that had occurred during the development of the Framework.

Our Cultural Capability Framework is currently under review.
