At The Benevolent Society, we understand that age is no longer a barrier to living an active and independent life, but sometimes support is needed to make the most of every opportunity. Sharene, who works as a Home Support Partner in our Ageing Services team, shares her experiences helping clients with their needs.

Tell us about your job

I’m a Home Support Parter in the Ageing Services team. I run Home Care Packages in South-West Sydney, Southern Highlands and Western Sydney, to ensure our clients are receiving services and a tailored Home Care Package to suit their various needs.

What made you choose your career path with The Benevolent Society?

I enjoy The Benevolent Society’s values and the opportunity for career growth. The Benevolent Society is a very positive workplace and the opportunity to be in the ageing sector whilst I studied was very beneficial as I’m getting on-the-job experience.

What do you think are the most important skills to have in your job?

Compassion and empathy, an understanding of the ageing Australian public, time management, resilience and multitasking.

What do you love most about your profession and what keeps you motivated?

I love our clients! They’re so different to each other and have so many stories of their life and history to share. Every time I go to visit a new client, they always have something new for me to learn. I’m motivated by ensuring that my clients are living their best life and able to stay in their home for as long as possible.

What do you find most challenging about the work you do?

The most challenging part of my role is the passing of wonderful clients, it's always challenging to get the news.

Can you share any inspirational moments in your career with The Benevolent Society that have stood out?

I have a client who was widowed four years ago and has no family. As her husband became more ill and could not drive, the Commonwealth Home Support Program started to help her go shopping. Once her husband had passed, she had become increasingly lonely. The client said that The Benevolent Society had enhanced her life, as she now receives shopping services every week and looks forward to going out with her Home Support Team Member. This client is very inspiring because in the face of adversity, she pushed through and lives her life to the fullest.
