Jeanette and Donald are like many couples – they are empty nesters, proud grandparents, and are enjoying the slower pace of retirement.  

Despite living happily in their South Sydney home, the couple requires extra assistance and were referred to the Care Finder Program. It wasn’t until they started to use the service that they received more than just support for their needs – they found a new friend, Hana. 

Hana is Jeanette and Donald’s Care Connector from the Care Finder Program and has been assisting them for over three months.  

The Care Finder Program supports older Australians to find, apply for, and gain access to aged care services that are often difficult to navigate. 


Jeanette says since the COVID pandemic, gaining access to services had been difficult but the moment she met Hana, she knew she had found someone special. 

“When I first met Hana, it felt like I had known her for years. We really didn’t need a lot, but she took the time to understand what we could receive support with around the home at this stage in our lives,” she said.  

Hana identified that Jeanette and Donald needed immediate support with general home maintenance such as cleaning and gardening. Since then, she has also arranged weekly social support services.  

Hana says her role as Care Connector doesn’t end once a service provider engages with the client and regular check-ins are essential. 

“We advocate on our clients’ behalf to ensure they are receiving the right services for them, to make sure they are happy with the quality of the service, and to answer any questions,” she said. 

Donald says that the social support allows the couple to make new friends within their local community. 

“Each week, transport is organised for a group of us to go out for lunch together. It’s something we look forward to and that’s because of Hana.” 

Jeanette tearfully proclaims that not only has Hana made a huge difference to their general everyday living, but she’s also become e a lifelong friend. 

“Hana is a sister, a friend – she never stops asking us what we need. She has never left us.” 

The process of registering for Care Finder starts with a home visit to discover what supports are required.
