Sometimes all it takes is a day out in the sun to remind young carers that they deserve time to just be themselves. Our recent trip to Raging Waters in Sydney’s west gave carers exactly that - the chance to laugh, splash around, and connect with others who really get what their everyday life looks like.
For our young carers, the day was all about stepping away from responsibilities for a little while. It created space for young carers to unwind, make new friends, and enjoy a carefree summer day out. That sense of community grew naturally from the first brave slide down a water ride to the last shared snack in the shade.

Even though the forecast hinted at storms, we got lucky and the weather turned out beautifully. Warm sunshine set the tone for a relaxed and joy filled outing where young carers (and the YCC staff!) could make the most of the slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers.
For a few young carers, this was their very first Carer Gateway event. Seeing them find their feet, build confidence, and quickly connect with the group was such a highlight. Their fresh energy and new friendships captured exactly what these events are all about.

We also celebrated two birthdays over the weekend, which added an extra spark to the day! Singing, cheering, and making those carers feel extra special was a lovely reminder of how important it is to uplift young people who spend so much of their time caring for others.
The water slides and sunshine were memorable, but the real heart of the day, as it often is with these events, was connection. Young carers often carry responsibilities far beyond their years, and days like this give them a chance to breathe, reset, and feel supported by a community that understands.
The bus ride home was filled with tired giggles and a few sleepy heads resting on their new friends shoulders – always the sign of a great day out.
