It's International Women’s Day on March 8th and this year’s theme is “Break the Bias,” which asks everyone, regardless of gender, to recognise and act against biases that can prevent women from progressing.

In recognition of this important day, we spoke to our Women’s Space Coordinator, Letwina, to find out more about how she supports women and what people can do to #BreakTheBias.

The Benevolent Society runs a Women’s Space in Labrador, QLD, that encourages women to enjoy a safe and socially inclusive space. Staff members foster a unique environment for women of all cultures and backgrounds to come together in a positive and supporting atmosphere to build social connections.

Labrador has a varied population with significantly higher numbers of older women and individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This population was recognised by Margaret Grummitt, the Local Councillor of Labrador, as being highly vulnerable to social isolation and launched what would become the Women’s Space on March 12th 2017.

Our Women’s Space welcomes people from all backgrounds who identify as women to the community. Volunteer-run programs are available every weekday, and staff from The Benevolent Society provide support services and referrals to other practitioners when needed. A small book and DVD library is also available for clients to access resources.

One of the volunteers, Mary, runs a “Drum Talk Circle” program that helps participants tell their stories through the art of drumming. Mary herself has challenged gender biases by mastering the jembe, a drum traditionally played by men in West Africa, in her Drum Talk Circle sessions. For many attendees, the emotional relief of expressing themselves have allowed them to sleep peacefully for the first time.

“It is incredible to see women supporting women,” says Letwina. “Mary has taken a tool traditionally used by men and transformed it into a healing instrument.”

Midwives also operate at the Women’s Space. “We encourage fathers to participate in the mum’s appointments,” Letwina explains. “We want them to be fully involved in the process that has traditionally fallen to the role of the mother.”

The Men’s Shed across the road is also a frequent collaborator, working closely with the team to share knowledge. “This allows us to see the same situation from different perspectives and equips our clients with the understanding to recognise bias and break down barriers,” says Letwina.

“As practitioners, it's important that we serve as role models in the community and be as inclusive and accepting as we can. Our team at the Women’s Space hone into the strengths of our clients to assist them in processing their hardships, whilst also developing programs and activities that are inclusive to people’s stories, skills, and abilities as individuals. We can break the bias by supporting and empowering women with the skills they need to call out bias when they see it.”
