Age is no longer a barrier to living an active and independent life, but sometimes, support is needed to make the most of everyday life. A Home Care Package is one of the ways that older Australians can access support in their own home.
If you are a Home Care Package recipient residing in Australia, please read this useful information on how to make the most of your home care package funds and any unspent funds you may have accrued over time.
What are unspent funds?
When you’ve been allocated a Home Care Package, you have access to funds that you can use to support you to live independently at home.
Unspent funds refer to the balance of your Home Care Package that has not yet been used for services. These funds are designed to help cover the costs of services and support that enhance your independence, well-being, and quality of life.
Under the Aged Care Act 1997 and in accordance with the Home Care Packages Program, unspent funds may be carried over from one statement period to the next. The Australian Government has provided flexibility in how you can use these funds to ensure that you receive the services you need when you need them. Sometimes funds can build up, and you might have a plan for this money, but it’s important to understand how much you have and what you can do with it to ensure you are getting the most out of your package and the services you need.
How can you use your unspent funds?
You can use your unspent funds for a range of services and supports, in line with the guidelines set out by the Department of Health. These services include, but are not limited to:
- Personal Care Services: Assistance with daily activities such as showering, dressing, grooming, and personal hygiene.
- Social Support: Programs to help you stay socially connected, including transport, companionship, or participation in social activities.
- Nursing Services: In-home health care including wound care, medication management, and monitoring of health conditions.
- Home Maintenance: Tasks like cleaning, gardening, and small home repairs to ensure your living environment is safe and comfortable
- Allied Health Services: Services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or podiatry.
- Assistive Technologies: Purchase of items like mobility aids, home modifications, or other equipment to support your independence and quality of life.
- Respite Care: Short-term relief for carers, including support for both you and your primary carer.
Discuss your unspent fund balance with your care provider
You should speak to your Home Support partner or Care provider if you would like to explore new or extra services, or changes to your existing plan. If you have unspent funds, they can help you understand how to use them. They can guide you through the options and assist in adjusting your Care Plan if necessary to reflect any changes in your care needs or preferences.
