Husband and wife duo Wendy and Brian are defying all odds despite their health setbacks. The couple, based in Western Sydney receive clinical services from The Benevolent Society, so they can  maintain their independence and continue living happily together in their home with their dog, Stella.

Clinical services support provides healthcare services directly to clients in their home. The team of registered nurses can provide wound and catheter care, palliative support and work collaboratively with GPs and specialists to develop tailored care plans. The team  can also organise allied health support including podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology.

Clinical nurse Subina says that her role goes beyond providing clinical care. It is also about motivating clients to feel comfortable discussing their needs and supporting them on their health journey.

“It is about building trust and listening to our clients actively. We want to empower them to take over their health, maintain their independence and more importantly stay in their homes”. She said.

Wendy lives with Parkinson’s disease and says the clinical services support has helped her not only manage her health but also stay  socially connected.

“The days when I have a panic attack or my Parkinson’s flares up, I know I can rely on Subina or one of the other clinical nurses and their support puts me at ease.”

Subina also provides wound and catheter care for Wendy to ensure treatment is maintained between visits.

Brian receives clinical services as he finds it tough completing everyday tasks because of a neck injury and arthritis  - support he says has made a significant difference.

“I get all my needs looked after by them. It’s taken a lot of the problems that I had with showering and eating away and they’re people I can talk to. It would be a lot harder without them”. He said. Wendy’s biggest comfort is knowing support is never far away.

“I know I am not vegetating away when I know I can turn to Subina or another clinical nurse – that’s a big thing for me to know they are there. If I didn’t have that, I don’t know where I’d be – I wouldn’t feel this comfortable”.
