NSW Government should support Aboriginal Community-Controlled organisations to keep children out of out-of-home-care - 7 February 2018 - The Benevolent Society welcomes the West Australian Government’s decision to contract four Noongar Aboriginal – controlled organisations to work with families in danger of having their children taken into out-of-home-care. It is a sign that some governments recognise the benefits of community involvement in caring for children, and that there are better ways to protect Aboriginal children and families than the accelerated child removal programs currently in place. In every jurisdiction across Australia, the numbers of children receiving child protection services has risen, with almost three-quarters or 74% of these children repeat clients. The report, shows that over 168,000 children or 1 in 32 children-received child protection services in 2016–17. Delivering Mental Health Support for Young Aussies in Rural Areas NSW Youth Week (April 11 – 21) celebrates Australian youth through a range of community events and activities. The 2024 theme is ‘Express. Empower. Get loud!’ and highlights the importance of providing young people with spaces to have their voices heard on issues that matter to them. Mental health remains a struggle for many young Australians. The National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing recently revealed nearly two in five Australians aged between 16 and 24 have experienced a mental disorder within the last 12 months. In rural areas of Western NSW, The Benevolent Society’s Rural Youth Mental Health (RYMH) mobile community-outreach program has been delivering crucial support to address this. Read more

Get loud! The Shack Youth Services at The Benevolent Society is embracing Youth Week this week by participating in community events across Sydney. Chat, Network & ConnectThe Benevolent Society’s Disability Services – Far North Coast are hosting a Disability Interagency meeting on April 10 from 10am-12noon at Lismore Workers Sports Club (202 Oliver Avenue, Goonellabah). It’s an opportunity for disability service providers in the area to gather, connect and network. This interagency meeting is the first to be held since COVID and the devastating 2022 Northern Rivers floods, which halted regular gatherings. Read more
