Kalena Smitham

Executive Director, People & Culture

Kalena Smitham brings a wealth of senior executive experience in leadership and commercial operations management gained within the government, not-for-profit and private sectors. 

She has a passion for health and community services, as well as achieving high employee engagement and performance.  

Most recently, Kalena was Executive Group Manager People & Culture at the Canberra Health Service, where she was responsible for industrial relations, workplace culture and leadership, workforce planning, safety, employee relations, diversity and inclusion, talent acquisition, injury management and workforce capability working with more than 10,000 staff across three hospitals, walk in centres and community services.

Previously, she was Executive Director People & Culture with NSW Ambulance, where she led the cultural transformation program in a complex multi-disciplinary service. 

Kalena is highly experienced working with government agencies and has been part of a policy team for the NSW State Government Attorney General and Minister for Justice, as well as holding an advisory role in government lobbying and investor relations for the private sector.

Her breadth of experience extends to aged care and employment services with earlier roles as General Manager People, Culture and Communications (NSW & ACT) with Southern Cross Care and General Manager – People & Culture, Risk & Quality at MTC Australia.

Kalena holds a Bachelor of Science (UNSW), a Masters of Management (MGSM), Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Torrens University) and Graduate AICD.
